How Ritualizing the Mundane and Slowing Down Can Transform Your Life
Welcome to She Thrives with Stef Barti, a podcast dedicated to empowering women to live their best lives and thrive unapologetically.
Welcome to another episode of She Thrives with Stef Barti — the podcast where we help you live your best life and thrive unapologetically.
Today, I want to share a lesson I learned from something as simple as my morning decaf drink.
It’s funny how life teaches us through the smallest moments — and I think that’s exactly what happened to me.

So, let me set the scene. I’ve recently become obsessed with non alcoholic drinks and decaf drinks.
Not something I thought I’d ever say, especially after spending so many years drinking wine and regular coffee.
But today, as I sat sipping my decaf drink, I realized it was teaching me something profound.
This blog post is based on Episode 60 of my podcast, She Thrives with Stef Barti. If you prefer to listen, you can check out the original podcast episode.
You may be wondering, “What does a decaf drink have to do with life lessons?”
Well, this seemingly small change has turned out to be a key part of my journey toward slowing down and ritualizing my life.
And today, I’m sharing how this simple shift has made a big impact.
The Power of Rituals
A few years ago, if you’d told me I’d be sipping a decaf coffee — especially a decaf frappuccino, no less — I would’ve laughed at you.
I mean, who drinks coffee without the caffeine, right?

Coffee, in my mind, was meant to give you that energetic boost — it was a stimulant, not just a comforting beverage.
Fam, amirite? 🤷🏽♀️
But here’s the thing: I was missing the point.
I realized that rituals are about more than just the substance itself; they’re about the experience.
And decaf, for me, has become the perfect way to tap into the soothing ritual of sipping something warm, slowing down, and just being in the moment.
It’s not about the caffeine; it’s about creating space to pause, take a breath, and be present.
And let’s face it, life moves fast.
We’re constantly bombarded with a information and a never ending list.
Most of us are running from one thing to the next — work, responsibilities, errands.
But when you take a moment to ritualize something small, like your morning coffee (or in my case, decaf), it can ground you in the present and help you slow down.
That’s the real power of rituals.
Why I Chose Decaf
You may be wondering, why the shift to decaf?

Well, this decision came after a major life change: I recently completed a year-long sober challenge.
For those who don’t know, I used to drink a lot — specifically, a bottle of wine a day. 🥹
It was a habit I didn’t even realize had such a strong hold on me.
In hindsight, I think alcohol was my way of self-soothing.
As someone with ADHD, I struggled with hyperactivity and felt overwhelmed often.

Alcohol helped me slow down, but it wasn’t the healthiest coping mechanism.
The sober challenge was eye-opening.
By taking a year off alcohol, I had to learn new ways of managing my energy and emotions. And after a year of detoxing, I didn’t feel the same desire for alcohol. 1
I didn’t crave it in the same way I had before. I’m still drawn to the culture and history of wine, and still like the taste but I no longer feel the need to drink it daily.

That’s where decaf comes in. My body no longer tolerates regular coffee the way it used to, especially after a year of detoxing from substances.
But I still wanted that comforting ritual — the smell, the warmth, the act of slowing down.
So, decaf became the perfect alternative. It allows me to honor that ritual without overloading my system with caffeine.
And here’s the best part: It tastes just as good as the caffeinated version, but with no jitters afterward.

The Role of Rituals in Your Life
The truth is, my experience with decaf has made me realize how much I thrive on rituals.
It’s not just about the drink; it’s about how rituals can elevate your daily life.
They give you a sense of structure and allow you to create moments of mindfulness, even in the midst of chaos.
I’ve been ritualizing everything lately: from my morning shower to my cooking and even my podcast listening.
Every action becomes an opportunity to honor myself, slow down, and be present.

I’m always looking for ways to add more rituals to my life, whether it’s how I organize my day or the way I prepare my meals.
The Power of Slowing Down and Ritualizing Life
Think about it — rituals are everywhere.
You can create little moments of joy and grounding even during the most mundane tasks.
If you have a long commute, why not make it a ritual?
Maybe you listen to a podcast you love, or you bring a special lunchbox filled with little surprises to make you smile.
These small rituals not only make life feel more joyful but can also reduce stress and make even the busiest days feel more manageable.

Ritualizing Life as Self-Love
Ritualizing life is a form of self-love.
By slowing down, being mindful, and creating space for yourself, you’re prioritizing your well-being.
Whether it’s through something simple like a morning cup of regular coffee or decaf or more involved rituals like meditation, journaling or yoga .

These moments help you stay grounded, present, and at peace with yourself.
I’m so passionate about this concept that I share it regularly with my community.
In fact, if you want more tips and insights on ritualizing life, I’d love for you to join my newsletter.

Final Thoughts: Your Unique, Beautiful Life
Life can get overwhelming, but I truly believe that the little things — like rituals — can make all the difference.

The next time you’re sipping your morning coffee (or decaf, if that’s your jam), take a moment to reflect on the power of slowing down and honoring the present moment through the ritual.
It’s a small but mighty way to reconnect with yourself and find peace amid the chaos.
Remember, you are a beautiful, unique creation — worthy of love, joy, and all the wonderful things life has to offer.
Embrace the rituals that bring you peace, and watch how they transform your life.
