3 Days in Albufeira: The perfect guide + itinerary for solo female travellers
Find yourself planning a trip to Albufeira soon?
This blog post will guide you and tell you everything you need to know.
Let me start by saying right away that I fell head over heels with Faro. I can’t believe it took me so long to touch down in Portugal.
And Omg!
I already know this will be my new obsession. Faro is everything I was looking for but didn’t know it yet.
Why choose Albufeira?

I will start by saying that before going there, I had no idea what to expect.
Let’s start by saying that Faro is part of the famous Algarve region of Portugal. One thing I noticed is the area was packed with French tourists and I do understand why.
It’s just absolutely beautiful!
What is the vibe like ?

Right of the bat, I get it why it’s so popular.
Faro is very attractive because of its laidback atmosphere. It’s your typical fisherman small town vibes where life slows down dramatically

Where is Albufeira located?
Let’s tackle the elephant in the room first.
Albufeira is a very popular travel destination of Portugal. Located on the coast in the southern part. This region is absolutely amazing with lots of things to do.
Best airport to fly into

Portugal is very well served.
There are quite a few airports making sure you wouldn’t have to travel long distances.
Although it is very common for people to enter the country through Porto or Lisbon. That said, you really don’t have to.
The Portuguese Southern region of the Algarve is well served with the intertnational airport of FAO.
From there, you can reach all the towns within Faro.
How easy is it to get to Albufeira?

I am not going to lie but I was very confused before arriving to Faro.
It felt like such a remote area.
I really thought I would have to hike to get there or some crazy remote adventure. But I was so surprised to see how reachable and accessible everything was.
Once you land in Faro airport FAO, most of the nearby towns are very close.
Faro Town is only 15 min away. Albufeira is only about 40min away.
How to move around?

I will be honest, I am extremely lazy and like my creatures of comfort.
If I’m honest, I’m a bit of a diva when it comes to traveling. ππΎββοΈ π
So for me, it was all about taxis. Both Bolt and Uber work fine.
I personally used Uber throughout my stay in the Algarve region and it was a pleasant experience.

My rides were always on time and at the exact location
I know we often hear a lot of horror stories but I have nothing but positive feedback to report.
Taxi is so affordable in Portugal that if it’s your preferred mode of transport, there’s no better place to indulge and enjoy that soft life.
How to get to the city from the airport

Like I explained earlier, your most comfortable option is to just open Bolt or Uber when you land at the airport and just order a taxi.
I suppose you could just hail a taxi.
I’ve had so many bad experiences with taxis that I always prefer to use those aps. I’m all about making my life as easy as possible.
Where to stay?

You can stay in Albufeira old town, nearby towns or on the coast.
Albufeira has many neighbourhoods and greater area you could stay in.
I ended up staying in the Guia area. I loved it because it has a small fisherman vibe to it.

That said, towns like this are quite the norm in the algarve area.
So if you’re staying at a specific hotel, I would recommend just taking it from there.
You can also stay at the Marina de Albufeira. It is touristy but really beautiful. Lots of houseboats for rental are also available. π
Should you rent an apartment, villas or hotels?

Honestly, this really depends on your preference. I usually prefer renting apartment because it makes me feel like a local.
But while in Faro, I splurge and stayed at a five start hotel towards the end of my trip.
For the first time ever, I could actually see myself spending a whole week in a hotel and being catered to.
Again, soft life queen, represent! π

Most hotels there include a very good breakfast. Half board and full board are also quite common.
For bigger groups, renting a villa would be a great idea.
We stayed at a beautiful beachfront villa and it was magical watching the sunset from the terrace.
ESIM ( Cheap travel Data coverage)

Remember the days where you would worry about finding a cellular shop open for you to buy a SIM card?
Ok I won’t lie that some people still rely on this method.
But guess what?
You no longer have to.
Travel is becoming easier by the day.
Now I always make sure to use a sim whenever I travel anywhere.

I used it for the first time in Prague, then Romania and more recently Turkey and Portugal.
It only takes a few minutes to buy it online, install the e-Sim on your phone and then activate it when you arrive at your destination.
Most importantly, you can top up in just a few seconds whenever you max out your data.
I have used alosim. But my friends have all used various companies. They all work great.
So do give it a try when you travel to Portugal or anywhere really.
Only thing is those e-sim do not come with a phone number but most of the time, internet access is more than enough for most of us.
Safety for solo female travellers

I felt so safe there. I was with a group of women at a rollerskating and surfing retreat. None of the ladies reported any incident.
Of course, I recommend that you practice discernment and always apply common sense.
Here is one of my Youtube videos that covers some of my best tips for safe travels.
Some locals do tell people to be careful about pickpockets and bag snatching during your beach time. So better safe than sorry. But overall, all good on the Portuguese coast.
Is Albufeira good for solo female travellers?
Yes , absolutely!
I never felt unsafe and I think ALbufeira is as safe as it gets.
This is the type of place that I would have no problem recommending for a solo female travel destination. Even as a first solo female trip, Faro region is as totally doable.
Women only Travel group tours

That said, if you prefer to join a women only travel group, check out my upcoming female travel group tour to Iceland.
Iceland Women adventure: Through Fire and Ice
This is something that I am so passionate about.

& who cares it’s only 9 AM?
I will be taking a small group of girlies to places like Portugal, Serbia and very soon Iceland. This is an amazing opportunity to discover the beauty of Iceland with a group of other girlies.
You can also join my curated list to be the first to know about upcoming women group tours.
Women Dance Retreat

Lastly for my fellow dancing queens! ππΏπππΌπ
I am also hosting a dance retreat in the beautiful Spanish paradise island of Menorca

Are credit cards widely accepted in Albufeira ?
Where are my other fellow cashless girlies?
ππ½ββοΈ
I’m happy to say that cards are accepted at most if not all establishments. I have never been to a restaurant that didn’t accept card payments.
That said, I recommend carrying Euros also in case you want to buy from street vendors.
Dollar dollar bills!!!

You will often find artisans selling their crafts and lots of fruits stalls on the roadsides. Some of the freshest produces are found that way.
Plus it also feels good to support the local farmers and artisans.

Best things to do in Albufeira
I was really surprised that such a sleepy town can have so much to do. There are plenty to keep you busy during your time in Albufeira
Go hiking

There are so many hiking trails all throughout the Algarve region.
In Albufeira alone, you can easily be connected with nature by going on various walks.
You will be spoilt for choice
Learn how to surf
I tried surfing for the first time ever and it was so much fun.
I am so happy that my first experience was in Albufeira. The instructors were so lovely. Not only that but it is so affordable also.

Catch some sun
My fellow sun worshippers, rejoice!
Wherever you end up staying, you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to sunbathing.
Lots of beaches for you to lay your towel and get some good ol’ vit D.

Visit nearby towns
The area is awesome for quick road trips and day trips. I was able to check out a few towns such as:
Praia da Oura

You really can’t go wrong here. There are so many small towns less than an hour away for you to explore. They are relatively similar yet with each their own vibe.
Praia da Oura has a blue flag beach which means the water quality and safety is top-notch.
Cavoeiro
This town has a special place in my heart. It is absolutely breathtaking.
Think post card worthy little picturesque town. π₯Ή
If you can only pick one place to visit, I would definitely make it this one.

Do take the time to climb the stairs and explore a bit. This is also where you will find some beautiful caves.
Follow the stairways and they will lead you to said caves.
At first I thought I would need to hire a boat or go through the ocean. But it was very pleasant to see that they are 100% accessible through the pathway.
From the main city beach , it only takes about 20 minute to walk to the cave.
10/10 recommend Cavoeiro.
It is a beautiful place for pictures and absolutely stunning.
Water sports

There are lots of water sports to partake in when you are in Albufeira.
You will quickly see that surfing is a major one but depending on which city you settle for, the options will be different.
For example, I noticed that some coasts had inflatables set up on the beach and others did not.
Kayaking
Kayaking was so much fun. I did not expect to love it in Albufeira. There are so many cool places to check out.
There is something really magical about kayaking in the open sea. Moreover, you will find plenty of routes. So there is no chance of you getting bored.
Yoga classes

There is something about those islands that make people slow down and embrace mindfulness.
They’re a few studios around the place. You can easily find yoga teachers for private hire in case you are traveling with a group and want them to come to you.
When I was there the first time, it was such a unique experience to sit on the sandy beach and do some yoga every morning at 7am.
I will never forget the magical experience of watching the sun rise. Each time was different and forever imprinted onto my mind.
Mindfulness

I personally really love to move when I am on vacation.
So if you are also into active vacation and mindfulness, this region makes for a great destination.
Especially that the pace of life is really slow so it naturally forces you to also slow down.
Enjoy outstanding food
This was such a pleasant surprise. I don’t think I ever had any bad food.
I had so much fresh seafood, I feel super blessed.
This was an incredible experience. I still think about that fresh seabags I had for lunch. And then I had what is possibly the best grilled octopus of my life. πΒ

Explore Portuguese wines
Sadly, I was still doing my dry year challenge when I visited Albufeira. π₯Ίπ
But I have heard great things from the local wines. I also saw plenty of wine tours being advertised.

Albufeira FAQ
Is Albufeira worth visiting for tourists?
For me, this is a resounding yes.
There are lots to do as per this current Albufeira blog. The weather is lovely and the food is really good.

Why not go to Albufeira?
The internet can be so funny.
When I was researching Albufeira, so many blogs were talking about how it wasn’t worth visiting and how touristy it felt.
After spending a considerable amount of time visiting various parts in Albufeira, my experience was the total opposite.
I actually fell head over heels for its many small fishing towns.

What is it best known for?
According to the internet, Albufeira is known for its beaches.
Ok well, I won’t counter that but I would say that surfing is a major activity.
Ok, fine!
I guess it still comes back to those beaches after all π€

Is it better to stay in Lagos or Albufeira?
I prefer Albufeira over lagos.
Lagos has a more local feel but I also feel like it was a poorer area.
I can’t say that I felt any crazy looming danger but it definitely felt less safer than Albufeira.
Besides Albufeira allows you to be directly close to the sea if that is important to you. Whereas Lagos is a bit more of an in-land town.

Is Albufeira a party town?
Don’t write off Albufeira as a party town.
Some parts have an active party scene at night but there are also plenty of quieter areas.
I am not much of a party girl myself. Although yes I do dance and like to hit the dance floor occasionally.
That said, I don’t particularly enjoy the nightclubs atmosphere.
So I was happy to see that Albufeira was not an all over party city. If you’ve ever been to Ibiza, you would understand my fear.

On the other side, if you’re a party person, you won’t have any problem finding your people. I did notice plenty of Irish clubs also. π
But if you re like me and prefer nice dinners, lively atmosphere. But then you like to go back home for a quiet retreat, you will have a lovely time.
Here is my YouTube vlog from my time in Albufeira. This can give you an idea about the vibes.
Would I recommend Albufeira for solo female travellers?

Generally speaking, I think Albufeira is safe for solo female travelers.
As a solo female traveler, I never felt unsafe.
The locals are also very friendly and welcoming. I would say so much more than the Spanish counterparts from the mainland, for comparison’s sake.
Overall, Albufeira is safe, just practice your normal safety procedures and common sense.
Is the town safe at night?
This obviously depends on where you end up staying. I felt very comfortable going about my business late at night and doing early morning dance and meditation sessions.
Which month is best to visit?
As usual, summer months are always busy.
I recommend going during the shoulder season, April, May, September and October for pleasant weather, beach time and less people.
On the flip side, my local surfing instructor @surfalbufeira recommended winter as the ideal time for surfing.
So don’t let those winter months scare you

How many days do you need for Albufeira?
I felt I could stay there for an indefinite period of time.
I think the Algarve and Albufeira is the perfect place for a slow travel type of vacation.
That said, if you are short on time, I recommend you spend 3 days to one week.
One week would be the minimum I would go for.
Two weeks would give you a very relaxing vacation with plenty of time for exploration.
If you’re only coming for 3 days, please just choose one spot so that you can enjoy your time and not feel overwhelmed.
Are taxis safe?

Taxis are as safe as it gets. It was nice not having to worry about getting scammed. The drivers were also very pleasant.
This was a stark difference with the fast and furious taxi drivers from my stay in Cappadocia and Istanbul right before arriving in the Algarve region.
Which taxi apps to use?

I used Uber to get around.
Most of my friends used Bolt which is the app I usually use the most but after using Uber in Istanbul, I think my mind was still linked to it. lol
Is Albufeira bad for mosquitoes?
OMG, YES! The mosquitoe situation is absolutely TERRIBLE in ALbufeira.
I showed up so clueless and got destroyed.

From my understanding, there are various types of mosquitoes.
On the first day, I had a massive inflamed spot on my legs. And various friends of mine also had skin reaction.
These mosquitoes are vicious and will start feasting on you the second the sun starts to set.
So please do save yourself and bring a repellent.

Can you swim in Albufeira?
Yes it is swimmable.
Of course this isn’t the Mediterranean Sea. So don’t expect ultra warm water temperature.
That said, I went in with my wet suit during surfing and it was very pleasant.
Is Albufeira a nice place to learn how to surf?
I would say the Algarve is an amazing place to learn surfing.

Is Surfing beginner friendly?
Albufeira is very beginner surf friendly.
The instructors are knowledgeable, friendly and private surfing classes are so affordable. I was surprised to see 35 Euros for private sessions.
I left wishing I could see those same prices in Dubai and Abu Dhabi πππ

How are the beaches?
You will find lots of beaches with sandy shores.
Waves are also plentiful. The great thing is that lots of quiet calmer beaches are also available.
This was the case for the beautiful picturesque town of Cavoeiro .
So in a way this variety allows for you to both surf and relax depending of your mood during your vacation.
Wrap up
In sum, Albufeira is amazing.
I can’t wait to go back over and over again. I think you will also have a great time there.
