9 Practical Tips to Beat Seasonal Depression & Thrive Through Winter

This blog post is inspired by the latest episode 9 of the She Thrives with Stef Barti podcast, dedicated to empowering women to live their best lives and thrive unapologetically.

In Today’s episode we dive into actionable tips for tackling seasonal depression and making the most of winter. I know the cold, gray months can be tough, but together, we’ll explore how to embrace the season and maintain your wellness.

Winter can be beautiful—there’s no doubt about that.

But for many of us, it also brings shorter days, less sunlight, and a drop in energy.

Seasonal depression is real, and I’ve personally navigated my fair share of long, harsh winters in Canada.

Trust me, I know what it’s like to feel like winter might just last six months!

But through trial and error, I’ve come up with strategies that helped me survive and even thrive during those tough months.

I’m excited to share my best tips for staying energized, balanced, and positive as you face the winter season.

1. Get Moving

First and foremost, if you’re dealing with seasonal depression, get moving.

I know it’s tempting to curl up under blankets and just hibernate, but physical movement is one of the best ways to combat the “winter blues.”

When you move, your body releases endorphins—the feel-good chemicals that help elevate your mood.

Whether it’s a morning jog, a spin class, or even dancing to your favorite tunes in the living room, movement is essential.

A community-based workout can help even more!

If you enjoy socializing, consider joining a dance class or group fitness activity—whether it’s salsa, yoga, or jujitsu.

That added social element can help you feel more connected, too.

It’s all about connecting with your authentic self and bringing more joy, love, and power into your life.

If you need some help to embody your magic, I created the perfect self love course to ignite the goddess in you ✨“Unleash Your Wild Feminine” ✨

2. Take a Winter Break

If you’re lucky enough to have the flexibility, take a winter break.

When I lived in Montreal, I’d often escape the long, harsh winters by road-tripping to Florida.

Trying not to take life so serious

It was a fantastic way to break up the season and recharge my energy. You don’t have to take a month-long vacation; even a week or a few days in a sunnier place can give you the mental reset you need.

For those in North America, destinations like Mexico, Cuba, or the Dominican Republic are great options to soak up some warmth and vitamin D.

3. Avoid Alcohol (Yes, Really!)

I know, I know.

It’s easy to reach for a glass of wine or a cocktail when you’re feeling down, but alcohol can actually make things worse.

While it might give you an initial sense of relaxation, alcohol can lead to a crash later on, which will only amplify the effects of seasonal depression.

Instead, try healthier coping mechanisms like exercising, spending time in nature, or diving into a creative project.

4. Embrace the Outdoors, Even When It’s Cold

It’s tempting to stay inside when it’s freezing, but even a little time outside can help boost your mood.

Layer up, grab a hot drink, and go for a walk in the park or around the block.

Some cities even host winter festivals and outdoor events like Igloo Fest or outdoor EDM concerts, which can be a fun way to connect with others while embracing the cold.

Trust me, dancing outside to good music with a warm coat on can work wonders!

5. Brighten Your Wardrobe

Winter tends to be drab.

Gray skies, snow, and dark nights can make it feel like the world is a little colorless.

One of my personal tips is to wear bright colors.

Add some cheer to your day by incorporating fun outfits, wearing a pop of color, or even putting on your favorite lipstick.

Bright colors can be uplifting and remind you that there’s joy even on the gloomiest days.

6. Try Winter Sports

One of my biggest regrets is not getting into winter sports sooner.

Skiing, snowboarding, or even ice skating can make winter feel fun instead of draining.

If you have access to winter resorts or local ice rinks, I highly recommend giving them a try.

It’s not just about the activity; it’s the fresh air, the excitement, and the sense of achievement that come with learning something new.

Plus, it’ll keep your body moving and your spirits high.

7. Pick Up a New Activity

Why not use the winter months to tackle a new challenge?

Whether it’s learning how to skate, picking up a new fitness routine, or trying something completely out of your comfort zone like pole dancing or jujitsu, adding new skills to your life gives you something exciting to focus on.

The sense of accomplishment and the rush of new experiences can help keep your mind positive and engaged.

8. Create a Cozy Home Sanctuary

When the weather outside is frightful, make your indoors delightful.

Homemaking became one of my secret weapons for battling seasonal depression.

By adding a few cozy touches to your home—like plants, warm lighting, or a fresh decor update—you can create a space that nurtures you through the colder months.

Add blankets, candles, and other comfort items to make your living space a sanctuary.

9. Nourish Your Body with Healthy Food

One of the best things you can do for your body during the winter months is to feed it well.

Nourishing foods like fruits, veggies, whole grains, and healthy fats provide the nutrients your body needs to feel its best.

I’ve personally been loving virgin drinks like healthy iced teas and sparkling lemonades to add a refreshing twist to my routine.

You might even experiment with new recipes to bring some excitement to your winter meals.

Plus, a healthy diet can boost your energy and mood, which is exactly what you need when winter is dragging on.

Bonus Tip: Try Light Therapy

Some people swear by light therapy to combat the lack of natural sunlight in winter.

While I personally haven’t tried it yet, I have friends who find it incredibly helpful.

It involves sitting in front of a bright light that mimics natural sunlight, which can help regulate your circadian rhythms and improve mood during the darker months.

Whatever you do, just keep going one day at a time. And know that you’re not alone and that nothing lasts forever.

Sending you so much love and light 🫶🏾
