17+ Awesome & Unique Things to Do in Riga on Your Next Visit
Right off the bat, I will let you know that Latvia is my favorite Baltic Country and always a top contender whenever it’s time for a European vacation. The place is very unique, charming and aesthetically pleasing. Latvia might be relatively small but there is so much to keep you busy on your next visit.
I love Riga so much that I am currently in the process of organizing an awesome all female group tour over there. Stay in the know and also check out my Tours page to see my upcoming tours.
Without further ado, here are some of my best recommendations of the top things to do in Riga, Latvia.

The Classics
Take a Free Walking Tour

I truly believe this is the first thing you should do when you arrive in any city. It is a fantastic way to get accustomed to a new place. A knowledgeable guide will take you through the city all while sharing some very unique stories. In Riga, there are quite a few options. The Art Nouveau walking tour, the alternative Riga and Old Riga are all great ways for you to spend your time. The bike tour is another fine choice.
Get Lost in the Old Town

This is why I always recommend starting with the free walking tour as it allows you to get your bearings. Now the fun can begin. Do take the time to wander around the old town and even beyond around the Centrs area . The old town itself is extremely photogenic and historic.

Admire the House of the Black Heads

Both my guide and the internet say that this is the most photographed structure of Riga. And I totally understand why. The edifice is absolutely stunning. There is also almost always some artist playing an instrument of choice in the square right in front, contributing to the magical ambiance.

Riga Central Market
Market Lovers unite!
This place is bustling during the summer months. Not only does it have a very unique location by the water but it is a fantastic spot for you to check out the local produces, flowers, local food delicacies and even do some people watching.
Changing of the guards at The Freedom Monument

Ok this might not be as grandiose as the Buckingham Palace changing of the guards. But still, this offers a glimpse into the local history, symbolism and heritage. This square is very important as the statue is an homage to the soldiers who were killed during the Latvian independence quest.
The Corner House

You can visit this historical building which used to be the headquarters of the soviet KGB. I went on one of their guided English tour and saying it was moving and sad would be a major understatement. Nevertheless, I do recommend it, especially if you would like to dive a little deeper into the region’s turbulent past.
Travel back in Time & Attend a Ballet or Opera at the Latvian National Opera

I absolutely love the Latvian National Opera. I always make sure to check the schedule whenever I find myself in Riga. Last time I had the pleasure to go watch ” The Blue Danube” and it was magical. The building itself is like traveling back in time. I definitely recommend it for a bit of old culture.
Also I couldn’t stop admiring the beautiful ceiling and how beautiful everyone was looking.
Unique Things ( quirky) to Do in Riga
Hit Up Riga Shooting Range

One of my absolute favorite things to do in Riga. I always make sure I book a session at the Riga Shooting Range and get some adrenaline rush. They have a good arsenal here. My favorite is the Franchi Spas-15 . If you think you’d enjoy this as much as I do, pay them a visit. The guys are absolutely lovely and will take great care of you.

Please note that they only accept cash and you also need to bring your passport. Lastly, the place is very popular so do book as soon as you know your dates to avoid disappointment.

Riga Beer Bike
If you like beer and a party atmosphere, you should check this out. This takes multitasking to the next level. You know sometimes, your regular bar crawl is just a little bit too basic. And this is where the Riga beer bike comes into play. You get to enjoy beer while also strolling along the city.
Baking Workshop with Nordic Macaron
Do you like desserts? Why not bake some macarons while in the beautiful whimsical Riga?
I walked past this lovely little bakery shop almost every day on my way to practice. I have not had the chance to do it. But I already booked a baking workshop with them for my next Riga trip.
Boat Tour of Riga

Riga reminds me a bit of Amsterdam in the sense that the city has some very beautiful canal running through the downtown area. During the summer months, you can hop on a boat and admire Riga and the city life from the water. It is a very different perspective and quite magical.
Hit the Beach
Why not do something different and head towards the coast. The Baltic seaside is vey popular during summer. I myself often go to the Estonia seaside heaven of Parnu but Latvia’s just as popular and beautiful. Jurmala beach and region is a great destination for you to experience this. You can also do all sorts of water sports activities and boating also. This area will leave you with the best Baltic summer memories.
Active Vacation for Fitness Lovers
Feel Good Pole Dance & Workout

Ladies, why not do something totally different on your vacation this time around?

I absolutely love to have an active vacation and explore the fitness scene when I get to a new place. It is such a unique way to connect. You also get the opportunity to meet so many interesting people.
BJJ Team Strela Riga

If you don’t know, I am also a Jiu Jiteira and love to check out different Brazilian Jiu Jitsu academies when I travel to new places. If you’re also into martial art, do pay a visit to team Strela Riga and tell the head coach Aleksandrs that Stephanie sent you 🙂 You can check their schedule on their IG profile @strelariga

Go Shopping at one of the Oldest Mall & Have a Mani Session
I really love to lead a routine and a somewhat local lifestyle when I travel to new places. I always find that this allows me to get the most out of my time. This way also enriches the time I spend in the city. So I do encourage you to check out the local markets and handicrafts.

One of the shopping centers has been around since 1938. Can you imagine? Plus I really like how they kept as much as the original structure as possible. There is even a mini museum along the staircases. You can take a shopping break, slow down and dive in history.

And it’s also really fun to get a mani/pedi spa session. I always go to A&D Nails. The best way to book is via Instagram ( @siaadnails) . They are very quick to respond to booking requests but they do get booked up fast. So if you want to get your nails done, do take an appointment as soon as possible.
Nope! This isn’t sponsored just a genuine recommendation as they always take good care of me and I love pampering while traveling and getting my nails done 🙂
Plus it’s another way to connect and meet the most interesting people such as my lovely Taekwondo master and nail tech 🙂

I hope you enjoyed my extensive tips on on the best things to do in Riga. I will keep updating this list as I make my regular visit there. I also do recommend that you stay longer and take it slow. Riga is one of those places that you just have to slow down in order to capture the essence and soul of the city.
Check for local festivals
Always make sure to check for the local calendar. It happened so many times that my travel dates coincided with some local events. It’s always a fun way to discover the local culture and get acquainted.
