6 Reasons Every Woman Should Travel Solo at Least Once
Welcome to She Thrives with Stef Barti, a podcast dedicated to empowering women to live their best lives and thrive unapologetically.
This blog post is based on Episode 29 of my podcast, She Thrives with Stef Barti. If you prefer to listen, you can check out the original podcast episode.
Solo travel has a way of stirring up a mix of excitement and fear for many women. The idea of stepping into the unknown, navigating new places alone, and embracing the freedom of exploring on your own terms can be incredibly empowering.
As a travel blogger who frequently embarks on solo adventures, I can confidently say that every woman should experience solo travel at least once in her lifetime.
Whether you’re considering it or not, let me share a few reasons why traveling solo can profoundly impact your life, boost your self-confidence, and open your heart to unexpected connections.
It Boosts Your Self-Confidence
There’s something magical that happens when you travel alone. You learn to trust yourself in ways you never thought possible.
When you’re solo, it’s all on you: you’re the one who plans, makes decisions, and takes responsibility for your journey.

The first solo trip doesn’t need to be a huge undertaking. Even a three-day getaway can have an incredible impact.
Stepping outside of your comfort zone, making decisions for yourself, and managing the unexpected challenges that come up along the way will show you just how capable and resourceful you truly are.

It’s an experience that builds your self-esteem and gives you the confidence to take on whatever life throws your way.
Empowerment Through Independence
Traveling solo isn’t just about seeing new places; it’s about learning that you are empowered to do anything you set your mind to.
The more you take on, the more you realize your own strength. The freedom of doing whatever you want, without the need to consult anyone, is truly liberating.
Think about it: when you travel with someone else, there’s always negotiation—deciding where to eat, what activities to do, what time to leave. Traveling solo means you have complete control.

You can wake up when you want, eat what you want, go where you want, and most importantly, you get to do it on your own terms.
It’s a reminder that you are the creator of your own experiences and that the world is open to you in ways you may never have considered.
You’ll Discover New Sides of Yourself
Solo travel has a unique way of helping you uncover parts of yourself that you didn’t know existed. It forces you to look inward and ask, “What do I actually want out of this experience?”
When you’re not influenced by the preferences of friends or family, you get to experience things based solely on your own desires.
Take food, for example. When I’m traveling with someone, I may be swayed to choose restaurants that fit their tastes.

But when I’m alone, I can decide for myself. Maybe I’ll choose something I never would have tried before—like vegan food, if that’s what I feel like.
The point is, solo travel gives you the opportunity to break free from external influences and discover your authentic preferences.
This is true not only for food but for activities, destinations, and even the pace at which you travel. Are you someone who loves historical landmarks? Or maybe you prefer hiking through mountains?
Solo travel is a journey of self-discovery that goes beyond just physical places—it’s about uncovering new facets of who you are.

Get Out of Your Comfort Zone
It’s easy to fall into the habit of staying in our comfort zones. Solo travel is uncomfortable—but in the best possible way. It pushes you beyond what you know and challenges you to adapt to unfamiliar situations.
It’s often in these moments of discomfort that we experience the most growth. Whether it’s getting lost in a foreign city, navigating a language barrier, or making decisions on the fly, the discomfort you feel will lead to greater self-reliance and personal growth.
The more you stretch your boundaries, the more confident you become in your ability to navigate life’s challenges.

Each step outside your comfort zone builds on the last, creating a cycle of empowerment that fuels your confidence.
Meet Incredible People Along the Way
Solo travel doesn’t mean you’ll be alone the entire time. In fact, it often leads to some of the most meaningful connections you’ll ever make.
When you travel with someone else, there’s often less opportunity to meet new people because you’re focused on your companion.
But when you’re alone, you’re more open to conversations with strangers, and the chances of meeting interesting people increase dramatically.

I can’t count how many incredible people I’ve met on my solo journeys.
One time, while traveling in Palestine, I met a woman who invited me to stay in her home for several weeks.
We bonded over our love of culture, language, and the excitement of meeting someone new. That connection wouldn’t have happened if I wasn’t traveling alone.

In Nepal, I met a fellow Canadian on a bus ride, and we instantly connected. We spent the week exploring Pokhara together, enjoying the local culture, watching outdoor movies, and even having wine and cheese nights.
The friendships and memories made while traveling solo are priceless and often surprise you in the best ways.
There Are Other Options if Solo Travel Isn’t for You
I completely understand that solo travel might not be for everyone. And that’s perfectly okay! If the idea of exploring alone makes you uneasy, there are alternatives.

One option is group travel—a way to meet like-minded people and share experiences, but with the comfort and safety of traveling with a group.
I personally host group trips to destinations like Turkey, Serbia, Iceland, Portugal, and even a wellness retreat in Malta.
These trips offer the best of both worlds: the camaraderie of group travel while still giving you the opportunity to explore new places and connect with women who share your passions.
If group travel piques your interest, feel free to check out my website for more details on upcoming trips. I’d love for you to join me on an adventure!

Final Thoughts
Solo travel isn’t just about seeing the world; it’s about seeing yourself in new ways.
It’s about stepping into the unknown, trusting yourself, and embracing the freedom to design your own experience.
Whether you’re traveling solo or with a group, there’s something deeply transformative about traveling outside your comfort zone.
If you’re considering traveling alone, I encourage you to give it a try. You might just find that it’s one of the most empowering, confidence-boosting experiences of your life.

Additional Resource to help you slow down
Feminine embodiment & Self Love Practice
I created my “Unleash your Feminine Power” to help you really start diving into your own unique power.

In this course, you will learn to connect with your body through some very sensual movements.
There is no fancy choreography to worry about. I really wanted to make this as simple as possible.
The goal is to give you a somatic practice that you can implement into your daily routine in order to start embodying your authentic self.

It is high time we start prioritizing our relationship with our own body too.
Because in order to be truly happy and content in life, I really believe you need to strike for a balance.
That means feeding your soul, your heart, your body.

And this is the goal of my ” Unleash your Feminine Power“.
The beautiful thing is that once you start getting in touch with that fire within, it only grows from there.
This energy will go on to light up your path, simultaneously guiding you through life.
So in a way, it is your own inner guiding compass. 💕

Women Self Love Wellness Retreat
I am so passionate about women empowerment. Everything I do is based on this. I want to see more women embrace their authentic selves. Trust me life gets so much better.
That’s the main focus of my self love women retreat. In this Wellness retreat, we go deep. I really love to connect with my fellow sisters.
That’s why I only do small groups of 10-12 women.

This retreat is an invitation to embody your feminine and to dive into radical self love. Growth and shedding past limiting beliefs is the focal point.
We do this through various workshops, wellness practices such as breath work and lots of somatic movement.

As a dance teacher, of course we will also be using the power of dance and music to process, release and shed things that are holding us back so we can be born again.
Welcome to our transformational retreat where the focus is all on YOU.
Not only that, but we do it in style and comfort.

Our next retreat is in a breathtaking villa on the beautiful island of Gozo Malta. We will be staying in our own private villa.
And did I mention our own private chef? with our own private pool 🤭.

It is the perfect time to slow down and prioritize yourself.
Also, don’t forget to stay in touch for my Bali self love women wellness retreat, for pure feminine embodiment and lots of dancing also.
