12 Months Sober: A Journey of Clarity, Growth, and Empowerment
Welcome to She Thrives with Stef Barti, a podcast dedicated to empowering women to live their best lives and thrive unapologetically.
This blog post is based on Episode 45 of my podcast, She Thrives with Stef Barti. If you prefer to listen, you can check out the original podcast episode.
As I sit down to write about my experience completing a 12-month sober challenge, I feel an overwhelming sense of pride, gratitude, and… disbelief!
I can’t believe it’s been an entire year since I decided to take a break from alcohol. This journey has been one of the most transformative experiences of my life, and I’m beyond excited to share the highs, the lows, and everything in between.
Reasons You might want to reduce your alcohol intake
Let me take you back to the beginning.

I’ve always been a fan of wine.
Not just any wine – red wine, the kind you sip slowly and savor.
I’ve been a self-proclaimed wine lover for years. But when the COVID-19 pandemic hit and I began working from home, I found myself reaching for the bottle a little too frequently.
It started innocently enough, but over time, it became an everyday ritual. A bottle of wine per day – cheap wine, mind you – became my go-to.
I justified it because, well, at least it wasn’t hard liquor, right?
But the truth was, it wasn’t healthy, and I began to worry about the impact it was having on my body, my mind, and my overall well-being.
At first, I didn’t think much of it. In fact, I found myself resisting the idea that I could be addicted to alcohol.

After all, I was just drinking wine, and that was more socially acceptable, right?
However, my family and friends started to notice. My mom would say, “You’re drinking too much,” and I would brush it off.
But deep down, I knew something had to change.
That’s when I decided to take on the challenge.
A full year, no alcohol.
The Beginning: A Fearful Leap- How to Trick Your Mind
The first few days – and honestly, the first few months – were a battle. It was hard to imagine my life without my nightly glass of wine, but I took it one day at a time.
The idea of a full year felt impossible, so I focused on shorter goals. One day without alcohol turned into two, then three, then a week.
Mental Clarity
What I didn’t anticipate was how powerful the process would be. I was surprised by how much I started to enjoy the mental clarity and freedom that came with sobriety.

It wasn’t just about not drinking; it was about rediscovering my body and mind in a way I hadn’t experienced in years.
The Unexpected Benefits
As I continued with my sober year, I started to notice all the benefits I hadn’t anticipated. First, my productivity skyrocketed.
Without alcohol fogging my brain, I felt more focused, creative, and motivated than ever before. I was able to accomplish so many things that had previously felt out of reach.

Spirituality & Deeper connection with self
I also began to connect more deeply with myself spiritually. I’ve always been a fan of somatic healing and mindfulness practices.
With alcohol out of the picture, I felt more connected to my body and spirit.
I re-committed to my dance practice, and that sense of grounding and joy I found in movement helped me navigate the more challenging moments of my sober journey.
And the best part? I found that I was able to socialize and enjoy myself without relying on alcohol.

Going to parties, dinners, or even weddings without having a drink was intimidating at first. But I discovered that I could have just as much fun – if not more – without the booze.
In fact, I was more present, more engaged, and more connected with the people around me.
The Struggles Along the Way
Of course, it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows. There were moments of doubt, frustration, and temptation.
The holidays were especially tough, as I had to navigate parties, family gatherings, and social events where alcohol was always in abundance.

based on his mood and our likes 🙂
There were moments when I thought, “Maybe just one drink wouldn’t hurt,” but I stuck to my goal.
One thing that helped was replacing my evening wine with something else. Mocktails became my new best friend. I experimented with all kinds of alcohol-free drinks, from sparkling water with lemon to creative mocktail recipes that satisfied my craving for sweetness and complexity.
It wasn’t the same as wine, but it was enough to get me through those tough moments.
I also started drinking a lot of black tea, which surprisingly became a comforting replacement for red wine.
I learned that the tannins in tea have a similar profile to the bitterness I loved in wine. That little substitution helped me more than I ever expected.

The Power of Belief: You Can Do Hard Things
What kept me going throughout the year was the realization that I could do hard things.
I had doubts at the start, but I pushed through. And the empowerment I gained from completing this challenge has been absolutely priceless.

I want to remind you: You are capable of achieving things you never thought possible. If you’re struggling with something in your life – whether it’s alcohol, food, or anything else – I encourage you to believe in yourself.
Take it one day at a time, and start with small steps. You don’t have to commit to a full year like I did, but you can try a day, a week, or a month.
Every day you choose progress is a victory.

What’s Next?
Now that my sober year is coming to a close, I’m reflecting on how far I’ve come.
I’m not going to pretend that I’ve got it all figured out, but I do know this: I’m stronger, more connected, and more mindful than I’ve ever been before.
I’m also committed to continuing to explore wellness, somatic healing, and spirituality in a deeper way. This year has been very transformative, and I can’t wait to see what comes next on my journey.

If you’re considering a similar challenge or looking to make positive changes in your life, I’d love to hear from you. Let’s support each other in our journeys toward self-love, growth, and empowerment.
Thank you for reading, and I hope this post inspires you to take the leap and trust in your own strength.

Additional Resource to help you slow down
Feminine embodiment & Self Love Practice
I created my “Unleash your Feminine Power” to help you really start diving into your own unique power.

In this course, you will learn to connect with your body through some very sensual movements.
There is no fancy choreography to worry about. I really wanted to make this as simple as possible.
The goal is to give you a somatic practice that you can implement into your daily routine in order to start embodying your authentic self.

It is high time we start prioritizing our relationship with our own body too.
Because in order to be truly happy and content in life, I really believe you need to strike for a balance.
That means feeding your soul, your heart, your body.

And this is the goal of my ” Unleash your Feminine Power“.
The beautiful thing is that once you start getting in touch with that fire within, it only grows from there.
This energy will go on to light up your path, simultaneously guiding you through life.
So in a way, it is your own inner guiding compass. 💕

Women Self Love Wellness Retreat
I am so passionate about women empowerment. Everything I do is based on this. I want to see more women embrace their authentic selves. Trust me life gets so much better.
That’s the main focus of my self love women retreat. In this Wellness retreat, we go deep. I really love to connect with my fellow sisters.
That’s why I only do small groups of 10-12 women.

This retreat is an invitation to embody your feminine and to dive into radical self love. Growth and shedding past limiting beliefs is the focal point.
We do this through various workshops, wellness practices such as breath work and lots of somatic movement.

As a dance teacher, of course we will also be using the power of dance and music to process, release and shed things that are holding us back so we can be born again.
Welcome to our transformational retreat where the focus is all on YOU.
Not only that, but we do it in style and comfort.

Our next retreat is in a breathtaking villa on the beautiful island of Gozo Malta. We will be staying in our own private villa.
And did I mention our own private chef? with our own private pool 🤭.

It is the perfect time to slow down and prioritize yourself.
Also, don’t forget to stay in touch for my Bali self love women wellness retreat, for pure feminine embodiment and lots of dancing also.
