The Power of Detachment: Why Not Taking Things Personally Will Transform Your Life

Welcome to She Thrives with Stef Barti, a podcast dedicated to empowering women to live their best lives and thrive unapologetically.

This blog post is based on Episode 46 of my podcast, She Thrives with Stef Barti. If you prefer to listen, you can check out the original podcast episode.

In this post, I’m sharing key insights from a recent podcast episode where I dove deep into a powerful topic that can make a world of difference in your daily life: the importance of not taking things personally.

n today’s fast-paced world, where we’re constantly interacting with others, it’s easy to let someone else’s words or behavior affect us.

Whether it’s an unexpected harsh comment, someone cutting us off in traffic, or an encounter with a stranger who seems to be in a bad mood, it’s all too easy to absorb that energy and let it ruin our day.

But here’s the truth: you don’t have to take it personally.

A Personal Epiphany at the Mall

A few days ago, I had an experience that really opened my eyes to just how powerful detachment can be.

I was at the mall, trying to find a store I’d never been to before. As I asked a man cleaning the floor for directions, he initially responded politely, but when I asked him to please repeat himself as I didn’t hear him the first time, he snapped at me.

Instead of feeling upset or defensive, I just thought to myself, “Wow, he must be having a really tough day”.

And you know what?

I moved on unfazed.

It was such an empowering moment for me because in the past, I would have let that interaction spiral into something bigger, carrying it with me for the rest of the day.

But this time, I had a moment of realization: I had just unlocked the next level of life.

It might sound like a small thing, but this is a prime example of what happens when you stop taking things personally.

You regain control over your energy and your life.

Why Is It Important to Not Take Things Personally?

Mastering the art of detachment is one of the most valuable skills you can cultivate.

Why? Because when you stop internalizing other people’s actions and words, you protect your energy.

And protecting your energy is everything.

When you make the conscious choice to not absorb someone else’s bad mood, you give yourself the freedom to stay centered and grounded, no matter what’s going on around you.

This doesn’t mean you ignore your feelings or suppress your emotions—it simply means you don’t let others control how you feel.

Levels of Detachment: It’s a Practice

Now, I know that for some of you, this might feel like a challenge. Maybe you’re still struggling with caring a little too much about what other people think. I get it. In fact, I’ve been there too.

But here’s the good news: you can work on it.

Detachment is a practice, and like any new skill, the more you practice, the easier it becomes.

The key is to start small. For instance, the next time someone is rude to you, instead of letting it stick, practice telling yourself, “This has nothing to do with me. They’re just going through something.”

The more you repeat this, the more natural it will feel. And before you know it, you’ll have leveled up to a place where you’re not fazed by anything.

How to stop caring about other people’s opinions

Compassion Is Key

Now, I want to take a moment to talk about something that often comes up when we talk about detachment—compassion.

When you’re able to detach from other people’s energy, you also develop a deeper sense of compassion.

It’s important to understand that not everyone is on the same path of self-awareness or healing as you.

Not everyone has the tools or the mindset to manage their emotions in a healthy way. And while this is not an excuse for bad behavior, it’s important to remember that people often project their own struggles onto others.

This is where compassion comes in. We need to show up with understanding, recognizing that everyone is at a different stage in their journey.

But that doesn’t mean we allow others to walk all over us. Boundaries are just as important as compassion. I talk more about this in my episode on setting healthy boundaries, which I highly recommend you check out if you haven’t already.

Protecting Your Energy: A Visualization Practice

One of the most helpful practices I’ve found for protecting my energy is a visualization that a dear friend taught me.

Picture yourself surrounded by a shield or a bubble—something that protects your personal space. I sometimes imagine it as a ring of fire, or a golden dome that keeps the negative energy of others at bay.

This simple visualization has been incredibly powerful. It allows me to interact with people while still maintaining my own space, and it helps me keep my emotional and mental state intact, no matter what’s happening around me.

Moving Forward: Letting Go of the Need for Validation

Finally, I want to remind you that detachment is also about releasing the need for validation from others.

When we let someone’s behaviour or opinions dictate our mood, we give them power over us. And that’s not something we can afford to do.

I know it’s tempting to internalize criticism or harsh words, but as you practice detachment, you’ll start to realize that your worth doesn’t come from anyone else’s approval.

You are whole and complete just as you are.

If you need some help with this, I created the perfect self love course to ignite the goddess in you ✨“Unleash Your Wild Feminine” ✨

Wrapping Up

So, I encourage you to take a moment today to think about how you can begin to practice detachment. Start small, and be compassionate with yourself as you grow in this area.

And remember, your energy is yours to protect. Don’t let anyone else’s negativity take away your peace.

In this course, you will learn to connect with your body through some very sensual movements.

There is no fancy choreography to worry about. I really wanted to make this as simple as possible.

The goal is to give you a somatic practice that you can implement into your daily routine in order to start embodying your authentic self.

Because you are magic and deserve to take care of yourself

It is high time we start prioritizing our relationship with our own body too.

Because in order to be truly happy and content in life, I really believe you need to strike for a balance.

That means feeding your soul, your heart, your body.
