Navigating Holiday Blues: A Guide for Women Facing Seasonal Struggles
The holiday season is often portrayed as a time of joy, family gatherings, and festive cheer.
But for many of us, the reality can be far from the picture-perfect images that flood our screens. If you’re struggling with the holiday blues, know that you are not alone, and this blog post is for you.
I’ve been there too, and I understand how overwhelming this time of year can be.
This blog post is based on Episode 56 of my podcast, She Thrives with Stef Barti. If you prefer to listen, you can check out the original podcast episode .
The Pressure of Holiday Expectations
If you grew up with traditional holiday celebrations—perhaps a large family gathering, festive meals, and the warmth of holiday cheer—it’s natural to expect that same feeling year after year. However, as we move into adulthood, things change.
Many of us find ourselves away from home, living in different cities or countries due to work, relationships, or personal choices. And for some, the idealized holiday memories we had as children simply aren’t there anymore.

Whether you’re an expat far away from family or someone who has never experienced the “Hallmark holiday” magic, it can be hard to shake the feeling that something’s missing.
The truth is, not everyone gets to experience that “perfect” holiday scene, and that’s okay. You’re not the only one feeling disconnected, and it’s important to acknowledge that these feelings are valid.
You Are Not Alone
One of the most important things to remember is that you are not alone in your holiday struggles. As humans, we have an inherent need to belong, to be seen, and to be understood.

This is why social media platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and podcasts are so popular—they give us a way to connect with others, even when we’re physically apart.
So, if you find yourself feeling isolated this season, I want to remind you that many others share those feelings, even if it doesn’t always seem that way.
It’s easy to look around and think everyone else has it together, but that’s rarely the case. Many people may be hiding their own struggles behind perfectly curated holiday posts.
Bursting the “Perfect Holiday” Bubble
You know those pictures of happy families gathered around the Christmas tree, exchanging gifts, and enjoying a picture-perfect dinner? Well, not everyone has that.
Even those who seem to have the perfect family holiday can be dealing with drama, family tensions, and unspoken issues. What we see on TV and in movies doesn’t reflect reality for most people.

In fact, society’s unrealistic expectations of what holidays should look like often contribute to our feelings of inadequacy.
We’re bombarded with messages about the “perfect Christmas” or “ideal family life,” but the truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all definition of what the holiday season should look like.
You don’t need to follow the conventional script, and it’s okay to redefine what this time of year means for you.
Letting Go of Expectations
This holiday season, I encourage you to practice detachment—let go of expectations, especially the ones society has set for you.
It’s not about apathy or not caring, but about releasing the pressure of trying to live up to standards that don’t align with who you are or what you need.

The moment I began practicing detachment in my own life, I noticed a shift. I stopped forcing myself to meet external expectations and started focusing on what truly brought me peace and happiness.
It’s a powerful practice, and it can make a huge difference in how you experience the holiday season.
Reclaiming the Holiday Season

If the thought of the holiday season fills you with dread, it’s time to reclaim it. You don’t need to follow a traditional script or do things just because you think you’re supposed to.
Instead, create your own traditions that align with who you are and what you enjoy.
For example, this year, I decided to stay grounded. While I usually traveled during the holidays, I felt the need to embrace a quieter, more introspective approach.

Instead of rushing around or feeling pressured to meet certain expectations, I focused on enjoying my own company and doing activities that brought me joy—like journaling and indulging in creative pursuits.

Creating Your Own Traditions
This is the perfect time to start your own holiday traditions. Ask yourself: How do you want to spend this season? You have the power to design it.
Whether that means indulging in cozy activities, taking time for self-care, or simply doing whatever feels right for you, don’t let anyone else’s expectations dictate how you should celebrate.

For me, one of the best things I’ve done during this time is to simplify my schedule. I’ve been very protective of my time, ensuring that I only engage in activities and spend time with people who bring me joy and peace.
If something doesn’t align with my needs, I’ve learned to say no. This has allowed me to focus on what really matters and to celebrate in a way that feels authentic to me.
Focusing on Self-Care and Personal Growth
If you’re feeling overwhelmed or lonely, take this opportunity to nurture yourself. Use this time to reflect, engage in creative outlets, or simply rest.
If you’re not surrounded by family or loved ones, that doesn’t mean you have to spend the season feeling isolated or sad. Reconnect with yourself.

Journaling has been an incredibly helpful tool for me in understanding my own patterns and tendencies. It’s allowed me to embrace the quiet and slow down in a way I hadn’t before.
As you embark on your own journey this season, remember that self-compassion and self-awareness are key.
Ground yourself in what you truly need, rather than what you think you “should” need.
By taking control of your holiday experience, you can turn this time of year into one of growth, peace, and joy.

Final Thoughts
The holiday season doesn’t have to be something you dread.
You have the power to transform it into a time of reflection, self-love, and creativity. Reclaim the season, let go of societal expectations, and create traditions that align with your values. Most importantly, be kind to yourself.

Additional Resource to help you slow down
Feminine embodiment & Self Love Practice
I created my “Unleash your Feminine Power” to help you really start diving into your own unique power.

In this course, you will learn to connect with your body through some very sensual movements.
There is no fancy choreography to worry about. I really wanted to make this as simple as possible.
The goal is to give you a somatic practice that you can implement into your daily routine in order to start embodying your authentic self.

It is high time we start prioritizing our relationship with our own body too.
Because in order to be truly happy and content in life, I really believe you need to strike for a balance.
That means feeding your soul, your heart, your body.

And this is the goal of my ” Unleash your Feminine Power“.
The beautiful thing is that once you start getting in touch with that fire within, it only grows from there.
This energy will go on to light up your path, simultaneously guiding you through life.
So in a way, it is your own inner guiding compass. 💕

Women Self Love Wellness Retreat
I am so passionate about women empowerment. Everything I do is based on this. I want to see more women embrace their authentic selves. Trust me life gets so much better.
That’s the main focus of my self love women retreat. In this Wellness retreat, we go deep. I really love to connect with my fellow sisters.
That’s why I only do small groups of 10-12 women.

This retreat is an invitation to embody your feminine and to dive into radical self love. Growth and shedding past limiting beliefs is the focal point.
We do this through various workshops, wellness practices such as breath work and lots of somatic movement.

As a dance teacher, of course we will also be using the power of dance and music to process, release and shed things that are holding us back so we can be born again.
Welcome to our transformational retreat where the focus is all on YOU.
Not only that, but we do it in style and comfort.

Our next retreat is in a breathtaking villa on the beautiful island of Gozo Malta. We will be staying in our own private villa.
And did I mention our own private chef? with our own private pool 🤭.

It is the perfect time to slow down and prioritize yourself.
Also, don’t forget to stay in touch for my Bali self love women wellness retreat, for pure feminine embodiment and lots of dancing also.
