7 Truths About the Childfree Life No One Tells You

Welcome to She Thrives with Stef Barti, an empowering podcast dedicated to self-actualization and helping women thrive unapologetically. Today, I’m diving into a topic that’s often overlooked or glossed over—the childfree life.

This blog post is based on Episode 25 of my podcast, She Thrives with Stef Barti. If you prefer to listen, you can check out the original podcast episode.

Many women dream of living childfree, embracing their freedom, and creating lives full of adventure, personal growth, and passion. It sounds amazing, and in many ways, it is. But, let’s keep it real: there are some things no one tells you about this lifestyle.

Here are the honest truths about being a childfree woman—and why it’s important to embrace both the ups and the downs.

1. Dating as a Childfree Woman Isn’t Always Easy

If you’re a woman who chooses not to have kids, prepare yourself for the reality that dating can get tricky.

Society loves to paint women as the ones with baby fever, but in my experience (and that of my friends), many men actually want children.

They just don’t talk about it as openly because, let’s face it, they don’t have to carry the baby or experience the joy (and challenges) of childbirth.

You’ll often encounter the pressure of being asked whether you “really want” kids, and many of the men you meet may seem indifferent at first. But trust me, many of them eventually want children.

It can feel frustrating when you’re trying to figure out your relationship future ( if that’s what you’re looking for), and the baby issue keeps coming up.

So, if you’re childfree and dating, buckle up—it’s not all roses.🤷🏽‍♀️

2. Expect to Lose Friends

This is a tough one, but it’s true: You will lose friends when you decide to live childfree. In your twenties, you bond over common interests, shared dreams, and growing into adulthood. But as time goes on, things change.

People get married, have kids, and the friendships you once had may start to fade.

Some friends will become so absorbed in motherhood that they can’t relate to your life anymore.

Their identity shifts entirely to being “Mom,” and while that’s totally valid, it can leave you feeling a bit lost when trying to relate.

But don’t despair—choosing the right friends becomes easier as you grow older. Once you embrace your childfree life, you’ll attract people who share your mindset.

You’ll find that making new friends, especially those who understand your perspective, is incredibly rewarding.

3. Brace Yourself for “Bingos”

If you’re a childfree woman, you’ve likely heard what I call the “Bingo” comments—the unsolicited opinions from people who feel the need to judge your choices. For example:

  • “Who’s going to take care of you when you’re old?”
  • “What if you regret not having kids?”
  • “Aren’t you scared of being lonely?”

These questions come from a place of ignorance and judgment. People tend to project their fears onto you, but that doesn’t mean you have to absorb them.

Sure, it’s frustrating, but it’s also a reflection of their insecurities.

Who the F*ck knows anymore?

Often, these comments come from men who can’t fathom a woman being fulfilled without becoming a mother.

Don’t let any “Bingos” get to you. You are free to live life on your terms, regardless of what others think.

4. Prepare for Family Expectations

Another difficult reality of being childfree is the entitlement some family members feel toward your time.

Because you don’t have kids, people often assume you have all the free time in the world.

These methods really work. Here I am Literally grabbing lunch with some new friends I just made from the Free Walking Tour in Belgrade Serbia

You’ll hear comments like, “What are you doing for the holidays? You don’t have kids, so why do you need a vacation?” or “You’re just home doing nothing, right?”

These comments can feel hurtful, especially when others ignore that you have your own life, your own family, and your own priorities.

It’s important to set boundaries with family and assert that your time is valuable. Just because you’re childfree doesn’t mean your life is any less important than anyone else’s.

5. Content Creators, Beware of the Haters

If you’re creating content as a childfree woman like I do on this blog, podcast or Youtube videos, brace yourself for the inevitable hate. Whether you’re sharing your journey on social media or just being vocal about your choice to be childfree, expect some pushback.

Be grounded within yourself, always

A lot of the hate comes from men who feel threatened by your independence. You might see comments like, “You’ll die alone,” or “Who’s going to take care of you when you’re old?”

But here’s the thing—don’t let it bother you. I’ve talked about building a thick skin before, and it’s essential for content creators.

When you make the decision to share your life publicly, haters will come. But your response is what matters most.

Focus on your message, stay grounded, and know that the right people will be drawn to your authenticity.

6. The Loss of Your Old Self

As a childfree woman, you may occasionally feel the loss of old friendships or relationships. As people move into parenthood, they often lose sight of who they were before.

It’s all too common for women to become so consumed with motherhood that they forget to stay connected to their pre-baby identity.

But here’s the beauty of being childfree: you can explore your identity beyond motherhood.

You can pour your energy into hobbies, passions, and friendships that nourish you.

7. The Perks of Being Childfree

Now, don’t get me wrong. Being childfree is a wonderful choice.

There’s so much freedom to explore hobbies, pursue your passions, travel, and build the life you want. You often have more time and resources to invest in yourself.

It’s also easier to cultivate a community of like-minded women who understand and support your decision.

Your life is not defined by a societal expectation to become a mother, and that’s something to celebrate.

Final Thoughts

The childfree life isn’t without its challenges, but it’s also one of freedom, adventure, and self-discovery.

Whether you’re navigating the pressures of family, dealing with friendship changes, or learning to tune out the “Bingos,” it’s important to remember that you’re not alone.

You are living the life that’s right for you, and that’s what matters most.
