8 Toxic Social Media Habits You Need to Ditch NOW to Protect Your Peace
Welcome to episode 8 of She Thrives with Stef Barti—an empowering podcast for women who want to live unapologetically and thrive in their most authentic selves.
In today’s episode, we’re talking about the things you should NEVER do on social media.
With how quickly everything moves online, it’s easy to get caught up in the drama or the need for constant validation.
But trust me, there are certain habits that can harm your mental health and peace. So let’s dive into some of the most toxic behaviors you should ditch right now!
1. Air Your Dirty Laundry in Public
Okay, let’s start with a big one: airing your personal drama on social media.
Whether it’s a fallout with a friend, a family dispute, or a messy breakup, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter are NOT the places for these emotional battles sis’. 😩
If you’re feeling hurt or betrayed, reach out directly to the person involved, friends, a therapist, ANYONE.
Even your journal will do just fine. 🥹
Use text messages, calls, or private chats to work things out. There’s no need to broadcast your pain to the world.
After all, social media is a public space, and once it’s out there, you can’t take it back.
2. Overshare Your Dating Life
Now, don’t get me wrong—dating is fun ( for some), and we all love a juicy story every now and then.
But when your dating life becomes a full-fledged series on your social media platforms, it can start to feel like a performance.
Posting every single Tinder date, romantic rendezvous, or dramatic breakup on your feed isn’t cute.
It takes away from the mystery and personal charm of your love life. Keep some things private.
Dating doesn’t need to be a public spectacle. Let there be an air of privacy and mystery!
It’s all about keeping your crown and staying in your power and authentic self. 🫶🏾

If you need some help to embody your magic, I created the perfect self love course to ignite the goddess in you ✨“Unleash Your Wild Feminine” ✨
3. Using Social Media as Your Personal Therapist
I get it—social media is a place to connect, and sometimes, vulnerability is exactly what people crave.
But there’s a fine line between being open and using your followers as your personal therapy session.
While it’s powerful to share your story and connect with others who are going through similar struggles, social media isn’t the place to unload deep trauma or childhood wounds.
It can be therapeutic to talk about your challenges, but it’s much more helpful to engage in private settings—whether that’s with a therapist, a close friend, or a support group.
There are much better ways to process and heal than broadcasting your pain online.

4. Constant Meltdowns & Pity Parties
We all have rough days, and it’s okay to vent or express that you’re feeling down.
However, if every post on your feed is a meltdown or a pity party, it can start to feel like you’re looking for sympathy rather than support.
While vulnerability is beautiful, chronic negativity on social media doesn’t inspire empathy; it can come across as drama.
People may even start to tune it out, and honestly, no one needs to become the “sad story” that everyone watches from the sidelines for malicious entertainment.
Instead, focus on solutions, personal growth, and positivity in the face of adversity.

5. Over-Exposing Personal Information
In the age of online content, it’s tempting to share everything about yourself—your location, where you work, what you’re doing every minute of the day.
But here’s the thing: some information should remain private. 🤷🏽♀️
The internet is filled with both good and bad people, and you don’t want to make it easy for anyone to find you or track your movements.
Trust me! This ain’t cute sis ! 😩
This includes not oversharing details like where you work, where your kids ( if you have dependants) go to school, or even where you live.

6. Toxic Breakup Posts
I’m not sure when it became trendy to share every intimate detail of a breakup online, but it’s time to stop or at least do it more mindfully. 🤷🏽♀️
Trash-talking your ex on Instagram or Twitter only makes you look like the one with the problem.
Breakups are hard, but don’t let social media be the stage for your emotional drama.
If you need to heal, focus on self-care and spend time with people who support you—don’t air the dirty laundry in front of an audience.

7. Exposing Your Children’s Lives
And here’s my biggest pet peeve—exposing your children’s private lives on social media.
This includes everything from potty training moments to oversharing school events.
Yes, it may seem like a fun way to keep family and friends updated, but think about the long-term consequences.
When your kids grow up, they may not appreciate having their most personal moments broadcast to the world.
This is especially concerning in an age where cyberbullying is rampant.
Keep your kids’ lives private and preserve their dignity and safety. 🫶🏾

8. Constantly Seeking Validation
Finally, we need to talk about validation.
If you find yourself constantly checking your likes, comments, and followers to feel good about yourself, it’s time for a social media reset.
Social media validation can feel good in the moment, but it doesn’t build lasting self-esteem.
You are worthy regardless of how many likes you get. Start focusing more on your internal sense of worth and self-love rather than external approval.

Closing Thoughts
Social media can be an amazing tool for connection and growth, but when used incorrectly, it can harm your mental health and well-being.
By breaking these toxic patterns and finding healthier ways to engage, you’ll be able to create a social media presence that empowers rather than drains you.
Remember, you don’t need to expose everything about your life online. Keep some things sacred, maintain your privacy, and always prioritize your mental peace.

Additional Resource to help you slow down
Feminine embodiment & Self Love Practice
I created my “Unleash your Feminine Power” to help you really start diving into your own unique power.

In this course, you will learn to connect with your body through some very sensual movements.
There is no fancy choreography to worry about. I really wanted to make this as simple as possible.
The goal is to give you a somatic practice that you can implement into your daily routine in order to start embodying your authentic self.

It is high time we start prioritizing our relationship with our own body too.
Because in order to be truly happy and content in life, I really believe you need to strike for a balance.
That means feeding your soul, your heart, your body.

And this is the goal of my ” Unleash your Feminine Power“.
The beautiful thing is that once you start getting in touch with that fire within, it only grows from there.
This energy will go on to light up your path, simultaneously guiding you through life.
So in a way, it is your own inner guiding compass. 💕

Women Self Love Wellness Retreat
I am so passionate about women empowerment. Everything I do is based on this. I want to see more women embrace their authentic selves. Trust me life gets so much better.
That’s the main focus of my self love women retreat. In this Wellness retreat, we go deep. I really love to connect with my fellow sisters.
That’s why I only do small groups of 10-12 women.

This retreat is an invitation to embody your feminine and to dive into radical self love. Growth and shedding past limiting beliefs is the focal point.
We do this through various workshops, wellness practices such as breath work and lots of somatic movement.

As a dance teacher, of course we will also be using the power of dance and music to process, release and shed things that are holding us back so we can be born again.
Welcome to our transformational retreat where the focus is all on YOU.
Not only that, but we do it in style and comfort.

Our next retreat is in a breathtaking villa on the beautiful island of Gozo Malta. We will be staying in our own private villa.
And did I mention our own private chef? with our own private pool 🤭.

It is the perfect time to slow down and prioritize yourself.
