How to Stop Oversharing & Protect Your Energy: A Guide to Staying Mysterious and Setting Boundaries
Welcome to She Thrives with Stef Barti, a podcast dedicated to empowering women to live their best lives and thrive unapologetically.
We’ve all been there: the awkward moment when you realize you’ve shared too much with someone you barely know.
Whether it’s in casual conversation or during a deeper exchange, oversharing can leave you feeling exposed, drained, and, at times, regretful.

In this post, I want to share some insights into how to stop oversharing and protect your energy, so you can confidently navigate your relationships with more mystery, grace, and discernment.
This blog post is based on Episode 22 of my podcast, She Thrives with Stef Barti. If you prefer to listen, you can check out the original podcast episode.
The Struggle with Oversharing: Why Do We Do It?
Oversharing, or TMI syndrome, is a pattern that many of us fall into, often without realizing it.
For me, I realized that I struggled with this deeply for years. It wasn’t until I started reflecting on my past that I began to understand why.
Growing up with emotionally unavailable guardians made me crave validation, attention, and the need to be seen and heard.
As a result, I found myself oversharing with anyone who would listen.
There’s often a deeper emotional need at play when we overshare—it can be a way of filling a void or expressing our emotions in ways that feel safe.
Unfortunately, when we give too much of ourselves too soon, we risk feeling drained or vulnerable when we don’t receive the emotional reciprocity we need.

The First Step to Change: Awareness
The first step to breaking free from the cycle of oversharing is awareness.
I had to sit down and ask myself some really tough questions: Why am I doing this? How do I feel afterwards?
These questions forced me to confront uncomfortable truths and shed light on the behavior I was trying to escape.
For me, the key was recognizing the emotional triggers that led to oversharing.
It wasn’t just about talking too much—it was about needing to be heard, seen, and validated.
Understanding this helped me take accountability for my actions, so I could begin the healing process and start making conscious changes.

Setting Boundaries: Protecting Your Energy
One of the most empowering tools I’ve used to stop oversharing is creating emotional boundaries.
I like to think of my personal space as a circle. At the center of that circle is me—the core of who I am.
Everyone I encounter, whether they’re strangers, acquaintances, or even family, exists outside of this core. It’s important to remember that not everyone deserves access to your innermost space.

At first, I didn’t use much discernment. I was too trusting, and I opened up to people without considering whether they had the right intentions.
Over time, I learned that not everyone is there to support you, and some people may even drain your energy.
To protect myself, I’ve become much more selective about who I let into my inner circle.

If you need some help to embody your magic, I created the perfect self love course to ignite the goddess in you ✨“Unleash Your Wild Feminine” ✨
The Buffer Zone: How to Vet People
To keep myself safe and protected, I created what I call a “buffer zone” around my core.
This is an outer circle where I engage with others.
In this zone, I’m still open to socializing, but I’m much more cautious about who I allow to get closer.
Here’s where the vetting process happens: I assess people’s energy, their vibe, and their intentions before I let them closer to my deeper emotional space.
If someone doesn’t vibe with me on a similar frequency, or if they aren’t replenishing my energy as I do theirs ( Equilibrium and Homeostasis), they remain outside the buffer zone. 🫶🏾

The Importance of Energy Flow
One of the most powerful realizations I’ve had is how important it is to surround myself with people who contribute positively to my energy.
When you have people in your life who are aligned with your energy and your values, the connection is symbiotic. You give and receive energy in a natural flow.
On the flip side, when you allow energy vampires—those who constantly drain you without replenishing—into your life, it can feel exhausting.

I’ve learned the hard way that you have to guard your energy fiercely. I no longer waste time or emotional space on people who don’t contribute to my well-being.
Aligning with Like-Minded Souls
Once you begin to be mindful about the people you allow into your life, you’ll find that there are so many wonderful, kind, and high-vibrational people out there.
They are the ones who cheer you on, support your growth, and add value to your life. These are the people you want to have in your core circle.
I’ve discovered that when you intentionally align yourself with people who share your values and energy, you can experience deep, meaningful connections that foster growth and positivity.

You are not alone in this journey, and there are plenty of others who are on the same wavelength, ready to walk alongside you.
Final Thoughts: Guard Your Space
In conclusion, the key to stopping oversharing and staying mysterious is about understanding your emotional triggers, setting boundaries, and creating space for people who truly enrich your life.
The core of who you are is precious, and it deserves to be protected.
By creating a buffer zone around your inner circle, you can engage with others while maintaining a sense of mystery and self-preservation.

Remember, you are worthy of relationships that are mutually supportive, and you have the power to create a space that aligns with your values and energy.
Protect your core and let your inner circle be a reflection of the life you want to cultivate.

Feminine embodiment & Self Love Practice
I created my “Unleash your Feminine Power” to help you really start diving into your own unique power.

In this course, you will learn to connect with your body through some very sensual movements.
There is no fancy choreography to worry about. I really wanted to make this as simple as possible.
The goal is to give you a somatic practice that you can implement into your daily routine in order to start embodying your authentic self.

It is high time we start prioritizing our relationship with our own body too.
Because in order to be truly happy and content in life, I really believe you need to strike for a balance.
That means feeding your soul, your heart, your body.

And this is the goal of my ” Unleash your Feminine Power“.
The beautiful thing is that once you start getting in touch with that fire within, it only grows from there.
This energy will go on to light up your path, simultaneously guiding you through life.
So in a way, it is your own inner guiding compass. 💕

That’s the main focus of my self love women retreat. In this Wellness retreat, we go deep. I really love to connect with my fellow sisters.
That’s why I only do small groups of 10-12 women.

This retreat is an invitation to embody your feminine and to dive into radical self love. Growth and shedding past limiting beliefs is the focal point.
We do this through various workshops, wellness practices such as breath work and lots of somatic movement.

As a dance teacher, of course we will also be using the power of dance and music to process, release and shed things that are holding us back so we can be born again.
Welcome to our transformational retreat where the focus is all on YOU.
Not only that, but we do it in style and comfort.

Our next retreat is in a breathtaking villa on the beautiful island of Gozo Malta. We will be staying in our own private villa.
