18 Awesome Things to Do in Tallinn for solo Female Travellers

Tallinn is such a beautiful city. Most importantly it is extremely safe for women traveling solo.

I also noticed that Nordic countries and the Baltics tend to score quite high when it comes to global safety.

I am so happy to report that every time I travel there, I always notice a lot of women traveling also solo. To say that it is a popular travel destination for women would be an understatement.

Just a girl trying to live her life to the fullest πŸ™‚

In other words, if you find yourself inclined to go there, don’t hesitate.

Is it worth it? I wrote a whole blog covering this.

But the short answer is a massive resounding YES!

While you’re at it, I also made a video covering just that and it even went a bit viral. It is my #1 most watched video on my YouTube Chanel so far.

You can also listen to the episode in my women podcast “She Thrives” with Stef Barti.

All this to say that Tallinn is an excellent choice and you will have a fantastic time.

Here are some amazing things I recommend that you do during your visit to that gorgeous medieval town.

Partake in Sauna Culture

Estonia_tallinn_sauna
Many rentals have their own saunas

Let’s tackle the elephant in the room.

Because what else do you do when in Rome?

I recommend that you make the time to enjoy some sauna. It is literally everywhere in the city.

You can book some spa time if you don’t know where to go.

Free walking tour

Estonia_tallinn_old_town
Yep, I’ll choose this over mass tourism any time πŸ™‚

This is always a great thing to do in every city you travel to.

It’s no different in Estonia.

The free walking tour does a fantastic job covering a lot of history in such a short amount of time.

Do not skip it!

Tallinn Old town

Estonia_tallinn_old_town

Estonia did an amazing job preserving their old town.

To the point that Tallinn’ s old city is actually a unesco world heritage.

If you ever wanted to travel back in time and see what it must have been like to live in the medieval days, well now you can do exactly that πŸ™‚

Stop at the grandiose “Viru gate”

Estonia_tallinn_old_town_gates2
Tallinn Gate

Often referred to as Tallinn’s city gate, the Viru gate is historically significant.

It used to be part of the city’s defense.

Can you believe that it was built all the back in the 14th century?

picture of Tallinn Viru gates , old city gates
what a city entrance!

This absolutely blows my mind.

It is crazy to think about the many different people throughout history to have walked through the gates.

Absolutely insane!

Estonian seaside museeum / Lennusadam

Estonian waterfront tallinn
The beautiful surrounding area

The lennusadam is the marine museum located in the marina.

Yes this museum is very interesting and worth it if you have more time in Tallinn.

The whole area is absolutely beautiful .

The complex includes the museum in the building and the boat outside by the docks that you can also visit. I didn’t have time to get to the boat and only visited the internal museum.

You can start with the museum and end your trip with some refreshing drinks at the sea docks.

Watch a movie at the old soviet cinema Soprus

This is a very old cinema from the Soviet time. They do not have the latest movies but it offers a great nostalgic experience.

Beer tasting & brewery Tour at Pohjala Brewery

Estonia Tallinn Pojhala Brewery

A pleasant surprise in Tallinn.

The brewery is very popular and you can find their beer at many shops across the country.

They also offer an in depth tour where you will learn so much.

I was even taken aback by the very tasty Texas style BBQ grill on the top floor.

The area is an absolute must and the bar makes for some awesome cocktails too.

The place gets really busy into the night so show up early or book in advance.

FYI: ThE Pohjala Brewery also hosts a yearly 2 days craft beer festival usually around June 15th. Do check their website for specific dates.

Hunt Past Soviet Buildings

Estonia was annexed into the soviet union from 1944 to 1991, which is considerable amount of time.

Like most former soviet territories, there are a fair share of Soviet buildings scattered around. Makes for a very good destination for those who like to hunt down these buildings.

Tallinn Market ( Balti Jaama Turg)

Estonia_tallinn_market

Do not skip one of Tallinn’s main market.

This place has so much to offer.

Spend at least a couple of hours there. This is also a nice place to go shopping for some unique souvenirs or even the fish market.

Take a stroll at Tallinn’s waterfront

A favorite

The seaside is really lovely.

Do take the time to go for a stroll. You will find tons of restaurants and bars.

Hunt down street art

Estonia Tallinn best cafe kohvik
There’s so much art everywhere in the city

The street art scene is thriving in Tallinn.

I did not expect much from it at first and the city kept on surprising me.

That’s the good thing about not having expectations when you travel to a new place.

There are lots of arts plastered all around the city and I love how ecclectic and unique they are.

Time travel to a medieval era

This one thing that makes Tallinn so unique is that it really feels like you have just traveled back in time.

The old town is so well preserved.

Dress up the part

A lady dressed in medieval outfit in Tallinn Old town
Bygone era

What better way to shake things up and do something totally different?

Move over fellow commoners and now is time to make space for some creative cosplayers.

If you do feel inclined, nothing and no one is stopping you from dressing up like a medieval lady from the past to wander the old town streets of Tallinn πŸ™‚

I will definitely do this on my next visit. Because we should all strive to make life a daily adventure and forever feed our inner child spirit πŸ™‚

On that note, I also have an upcoming women dance retreat in Minorca where we do nothing but have the most fun time with a group of likeminded ladies.

Join my mailing list to stay up to date. For my IG girlies, you can join the party there too @stefbarti

Book a photography session

Estonia_tallinn_old_town
So many possibilities for creativity πŸ™‚

On the same token, you should definitely book a photographer or a videographer to capture some memories for you.

I know we all slowly got used to snapping quick pictures with our cell phones.

That said, I still think it is totally worth it to hire a professional. Especially that they are quite affordable nowadays.

I try to book a videographer every time I travel to a new city.

This way I can unleash my creativity and do some cool artistic dancing outside.

As a dancer who loves to travel, this is a very unique way for me to embody the spirit of the city I travel to.

Dancing is always the perfect food for my soul

I really encourage you to find your own way to make appropriate a city’s essence during your visits.

This way of traveling really makes the city come alive.

This offers a deep way of remembering and connecting with your host city, way beyond blindly following guidebook and ” Top 10 things to do in Parnu” list.

Hey, don’t get me wrong. I love me some good travel blogs but you get my point πŸ™‚

Explore the unorthodox wine making scene

Estonia Tallinn Pojhala Brewery beer tour
Anyone else love old barrels? πŸ™‚

Now I am pretty sure Estonia is the last place that comes to mind when you think of wine.

It was the same for me.

On one of my last visit to the city, I found out that there is not only a thriving craft beer scene but also a serious wine presence.

Now for obvious reasons, Estonia doesn’t have any vineyards so they do have a very unique take.

Trust me, I am a total wine afficionado but it is also worth exploring the fruit wine scene of Estonia.

Enjoy the unique food

More Things to do in Tallinn :

Tallinn’s “pyramid” Tallinna Linnahall

Tallinn’s old city hall was very mesmerizing to me.

There is this very old soviet pyramid looking thing by the sea.

I recommend that you definitely go check it out because it was a major highlight for me.

Some walking tour would make a stop over there.

100 % worth it if.

Spend a weekend in Parnu

poks bar parnu
Parnu is so lovely during summer

My friends are so tired of hearing me talk about Parnu.

But this is honestly one of my favourite places.

Parnu is Estonia’s most popular seaside town and for great reasons. Yes, you’ve guessed it. I also have lots of in depth travel blog covering Parnu.

Lastly, if you have more time to spend and are looking for another place to go within the Baltics, I recommend you spend some time in my beloved Riga

Wrap Up

Happy and safe travel ladies! Hope to see you in my women travel group or feminine embodiment dance retreats around the world.

Perhaps, I will organize one in the Baltics some time πŸ™‚
